Dear Parent/Guardian and Student,

Welcome to eighth grade Humanities. Eighth Grade Humanities is the study of peoples through location, literature, language and historical events. Humanities will include writing (including mechanics like spelling, and grammar), reading (including Battle of the Books and AR readers) and research (including map studies, internet activities and Powerpoint projects).

Students will have routine homework assignments.

1.             Each student is expected to keep a journal and write three entries a week. One entry each for the history

era, the literature assignment and the third entry on the library book the student has chosen to read.

2.             I will issue a syllabus of class work so that both students and parents know what assignments need to be

                completed for that absence.

3.             All students should have their library/outside reading book with them every day and should read and

complete a Reading Log which will be turned in every Monday. (All reading logs must be signed by a

parent or guardian.). If students choose a book from home, please make sure I have a note of permission

signed by the parent/guardian so that I know the book has been approved.

Materials needed:                3 separate spiral notebooks

                                                3-ring binder (1 1/2 inch) with dividers

                                                3 folders with brads

1 package of 3x5 lined index cards

                                                2 glue sticks

                                                dictionary at home

Grading Scale: A (100-90), B (89-80), C (79-80), D (not used), F (below 70)

Since 70% is the minimum passing standard, grades below 70 are failing.

Class Rules:          Be Prompt (Be in assigned seat at the tardy bell.)

Be Prepared (Have materials and work ready.)

Be Polite (Respect others and your environment.)

Be Productive (Use time and resources wisely.)

Be Positive (Even though we all have bad days.)

Consequences of misbehavior will include verbal warnings, contacts with home, additional work, in-school suspensions, and referrals to the office. Recognition for positive and appropriate work will be in verbal and written form as well as in Thank-you passes which can be used for extra credit. Students are expected to follow school rules which include “No Gum.” Please read the student handbook together. Contact us with questions.

Procedures: All papers must have a correct and legible heading which includes full name, period and date. Incorrect headings will be penalized. Nameless papers receive a zero. If a student is absent he/she should check the makeup work folders for papers and check with another student or with me for the assignments. It is the student’s responsibility to get the work and get it on time.

Many times there will be questions, especially for homework. As soon as I have an APS e-mail address, I will send a note home. Until then, please send me a note or  leave me a message at the school number 291-6845,  and I will reply promptly. My conference period is at 8:10 each morning, I will return calls at that time, during lunch or after school.  Please sign the attached form and return the signed page. Thank you in advance for the wonderful year we are about to share.

                                                                                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                                                                                Gail Love, room
